Go Green With Your Vaping!

May 5, 2022

Switching to vaping is already a step forward to being environmentally friendly. So, congratulations for not contributing to the millions of cigarette butts polluting our lands and seas. Plus, you don't have to feel guilty about the deforestation caused by farming tobacco. We're also not polluting our air with toxin-laden second-hand smoke. Nevertheless, there are still ways we can hurt the environment by vaping. Our vape kits easily last longer than one-time use cigarettes, but they can also cause harm to the environment.

What Is Vape Waste?

Vape waste is what you call any waste associated with vapes. This includes discarded vape pens, starter kits, pods or cartridges, e-juice bottles and packaging, and vape batteries. Though vaping doesn't generate as much garbage as smoking, vape waste is worse for the environment since it has three forms of waste: plastic waste, hazardous waste and electronic waste (e-waste). All of these are dangerous to the environment when dealt with irresponsibly.

Your vape pod components are mostly made of plastic. Unfortunately, they won't biodegrade as organic materials do – it could take a hundred years for some plastic to decompose, thus polluting our lands and oceans. In addition, e-juices can contain nicotine which is toxic to the environment. Worst of all, discarded vape devices are e-waste. E-waste typically contains lithium, lead, mercury and other toxic heavy metals that can leach into soil and water. The effects of these substances on humans and animals include brain, heart, liver, kidney and skeletal system damage. However, it’s not all doom and gloom — you can make a difference!

How Can You Make Vaping More Eco Friendly?

Living an eco–friendly and sustainable life doesn’t mean you have to give up all your small pleasures, like your favourite vape. It just means you need to learn how to enjoy these pleasures responsibly.

How to Dispose of Vape Juice?

As avid vape hobbyists, we want to try as many flavours as possible. We just want to vape the best e-juice out there. So, what happens to the forgotten, unwanted, or expired e-liquids in our collection? Unfortunately, we can't just throw away e-liquids in the bin without risk. Unsuspecting pets and animals may ingest them without knowing they are toxic. So how do you discard them? The safest way is to use an absorbent material to soak up the vape juice before placing it in a biodegradable bag and tossing it in a secure bin. You can use sawdust, wood chippings, natural kitty litter or more.

Recycling your empty e-liquid bottles, packaging and vape cartridges is also helpful. Don't forget to clean them out of any residue before turning them in to the recycling centre. E-liquid bottles and packaging will be processed according to your local community's recycling laws and recommendations.

How to Dispose of Vape Pods?

Since your e-cigarette kits are made of various toxic waste materials, you want to be responsible when getting rid of your devices. So, where to dispose of your vape pods then? Here, we'll discuss some steps on how and where to discard your broken or unwanted vape devices responsibly.

Disassemble Your Vape Pod Components

Can vape pods be recycled? Some parts definitely can! So it's essential to disassemble and separate all individual components of your vape pod. Then, determine which parts can be processed in your local recycling facilities. Usually, glass and plastic are recyclable. But, to make sure, you can check for a recycling symbol or number on some of the parts. You can then check online to see if your local recycling centre can accept them. For example, type 3 Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is only accepted in certain areas because it's difficult to process. However, certain recycling facilities may still receive this type of plastic. So it's essential to find out where the best place to recycle your vape is around your area. Generally speaking, if you see the recycling symbol located on the bottom of the package, you can recycle it.

Clean Parts Thoroughly

There is likely to be resin and nicotine residue left in your e-cigarette starter kits. This can not only be dangerous to the environment but also to the recycling process. So, before you take them to the recycling centre, it's crucial to clean each component. If you find any tough residue, you can easily scrub it away after soaking it in rubbing alcohol.

Responsibly Dispose of Lithium Batteries

Batteries hold hazardous chemicals that are flammable and harmful to the environment. So it's crucial never to throw your batteries into your regular garbage bins. Instead, you can go to supermarkets, office buildings and recycling centres, where they typically have designated disposal points for e-waste and batteries. This e-waste will then be taken away to a facility where they are broken down and either disposed of or recycled responsibly. You can even bring your old vape batteries to Vapora and we’ll take care of the recycling!

What to Do With the Other Parts?

Unfortunately, it may not be possible to recycle some parts of your vape. Instead, you'll need to dispose of them properly at a hazardous waste depot. Some of these centres will accept your waste through the mail, others you may have to drive to. Nevertheless, you'll be sleeping in peace at night knowing you've done everything you can to be responsible for the environment.

Are Vape Pods Reusable?

Do you know how long vape pods last? On average, these disposable kits finish anywhere from 200 to 400 puffs. It's safe to say that 400 vape puffs are equivalent to 20 cigarettes. So imagine, if you're vaping daily, you'll be accumulating 1.5 empty disposable vapes per month. That's a whole lot of vape waste! The increasing popularity of disposables has become a growing concern within both the vape and environmental community. But, as with any industry, consumer demand will eventually drive the trend.

As a vaper, one of the best things you can do for the environment is switch to reusable vape pods. If you're a beginner, it’s important to learn how to refill your vape pods or rebuild your coils to help you with your reusable vape kit. So let's all do our part in combating the issue by being mindful of the vape devices we choose. Not only will you help save the environment, but you'll also save a lot of money for yourself in the long run!
